“Before visitors enter Milo Community School, it’s clear by the sign by the doors there’s a transformational change going on inside the building.
A sign above the main entrance says “Empowering Lifelong Learners.”
More signs of that change can be found throughout the school.
On a wall by the main entrance, the school has a wall dedicated to recognizing a learner of the week, for students exhibiting traits of IB learners — to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective.
The wall also features words of the week.
Two large posters are located by the entrance too, providing information about the international baccalaureate (IB) program that the school is now implementing.
The aim of all IB programs is to develop internationally-minded people, who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world, says the International Baccalaureate Association (IBO), which is based in Wales. The IBO believes these attributes, and others like them, can help individuals and groups become responsible members of local, national and global communities.
Come this fall, the IB program will officially be implemented across Grades 1-6, but there are “little bits” that the Grades 7-9 students will be experiencing, says Rachelle Prud’homme, the school’s principal.
School staff have already started integrating the program into student learning, but the school, which is currently an IB candidate school, is gearing up towards a formal assessment by IB representatives next year. ”
